Coastal and Estuary Management

Capabilities - A Summary

Coastal and Estuary Management - The Basics

The natural forces of winds, waves and currents constantly shape our coastline, resulting in an ever changing seascape - beaches are eroded and rebuilt, nearshore seabeds and river channels are remodelled, sediments are carried to the coast and significant proportions of the foreshore continue to recede. The human activities can have a major impact.

The challenge is to meet the increasing pressure to develop the coastal zone with environmentally sound practices - ensuring that coastal amenity and natural character are protected.

BMT WBM specialises in developing programs which can satisfy these demands. Highly respected teams of professional engineers and scientists investigate all facets of the physical and ecological coastal system, designing strategies which balance the needs of human existence with the activity and beauty of nature.

The Breakdown

The Development

The development of the coastal area takes many forms and meets many different needs. The objectives for ports, harbours and marinas for instance will be very different to those for community use and residential development. We aim to have a complete understanding of the requirements of all parties and the associated impacts when creating development programs.

The Study

Detailed process studies determine the activities and effects of ocean waves, currents, tides, storm surges and sediment transport as well as the design criteria for works within the coastal zone. Specialist coastal and ocean engineering expertise, field measurement capability, leading edge analytical tools and practical experience are available to complete these studies.

The Management & Implementation

Identifying management issues and associated management options is essential in formulating appropriate implementation strategies. Decisions can only be made by taking into consideration all relevant natural processes, government policies and other factors which effect the natural coastal environment, amenity and use - social, economic, aesthetic, recreational and ecological factors all need to be considered. Community input through effective consultation is essential in reviewing options and preparing management plans.
